Our Story
Ballato’s: A Culinary Landmark in Nolita
Established in 1956 by John Ballato, our restaurant has grown from humble beginnings to become a cornerstone of the Nolita neighborhood in Manhattan. Over the past 60 years, Ballato’s has transformed into a celebrated institution, renowned for its authentic Italian American comfort food. As the New York Times' Jeff Gordinier eloquently puts it, Ballato’s is like "Rao’s, but you can get in."
Now under the stewardship of the Vitolo family, Ballato’s remains committed to the principles that have guided it since its inception: using the finest ingredients and never compromising on quality. Mario Vitolo, son of current owner Emilio, attributes their enduring success to these steadfast values. The restaurant is often described as evoking the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a “Sunday dinner with Grandma,” thanks in large part to Executive Chef Anthony Vitolo’s dedication to sourcing top-quality ingredients and crafting wholesome meals for everyone who visits, from everyday patrons to a loyal clientele of celebrities, musicians, politicians, and even former presidents.
Owner Emilio Vitolo, a lifelong cook, brings the flavors of his native Naples to Manhattan with every dish. He can often be found at his favorite table near the front of the restaurant, greeting both longtime fans and first-time visitors with the same warmth and hospitality that has made Ballato’s a beloved New York City fixture.
